The amphibious assault is regarded as one of the most complex operations, because of the multiplicity of types of ships, aircraft, armament, equipment and skills which must be employed, and because it requires that sea, land and air activities be coordinated with precise timing.

At the present time the Navy's amphibious forces total 42,000 men and 130 ships, of which 20,000 men and 61 ships comprise the Atlantic Fleet Amphibious Force.  The remainder are in the Pacific Fleet Amphibious Force.

Today, units of the NAVY - MARINE CORPS amphibious striking force are stationed in the western Pacific, Mediterranean Sea, and Caribbean Sea, prepared to respond instantaneously to any challenge.
